Can acupuncture really improve your performance levels?

Maybe you have no intention of stabbing yourself with acupuncture needles... let alone pay someone else to do it for you! Yet... maybe you need to try it. Acupuncture is a technique that observes the body as a whole. There are several meridians/channels that run through the body. Each meridian has a certain number of points. Every point has a function and a name.

But why is this relevant for musicians?

Well... If you have to perform or teach... did you ever suffer from laziness before getting on stage? or anxiety? or lack of concentration? or did you ever run out of energy? Did you forget your music? Did you wish you could have played better?

I know... those questions are not fair at all! Of course you will answer to one or more of those questions. However... what I'm trying to tell you is that maybe acupuncture can help you solve one or more of those issues. Sometimes we do not know it but we might have something that is not working properly and our body has to compensate.

This was taught to me by my very good friend (and family doctor) Keith Hoyt. Keith does not practice acupuncture. He's a world class Chiropractor who happens to use a lot of acupressure points.

Here's a little map that could help you figure out if you need acupuncture. Simply find a wooden "tool" with a rounded edge. It can be for example the bottom part of a spoon. You don't want to hurt your skin with a sharp edge. Apply some pressure on the points marked on your hand and evaluate how sore they get. I am pretty sure one or two will be very sore. This means that you need to work on them for 3-4 minutes at a time. Slightly apply pressure where it hurts. The pain should go away slowly. If the pain returns too often, this might mean that something more severe is happening to that organ. Acupuncture might be beneficial if that is the case.

Remember I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice. This is only for you to know my personal experience. I personally had liver and adrenal problems fixed by acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractors, and proper nutrition/supplementation. I can only tell you that those things work fantastic.

So... Let's say you find out your kidneys need some love and attention. What I would do is finding information about the REN channel/meridian in one of the websites I list bellow. Get a set of acupuncture needles and give it a shot for a few days. I'd find 4-5 points that make sense to needle together, put some soft music, apply the needles, and chill for 30-45 minutes.

The area surrounding the needle will get slightly red as if it had a rush. Only 1-2mm. This is a sign that you have applied the needles on the correct spot and that the point has been working.
